Spread the love

I’ve shared with you my family’s decision to kick high fructose corn syrup.  We’re still doing all we can to get rid of items with high fructose corn syrup and find new items without high fructose corn syrup to replace them.  One grocery item that you might be suprised has high fructose corn syrup in it is bread.

Many bread companies have heard our plea for food without added chemicals and without high fructose corn syrup.  There are more “natural” products hitting the shelves as many companies see this as a fad like the Adkins diet, low carb diet, low fat diet, or south beach diet.  For my family this is a life decision.  And, regardless of why the companies are choosing to make products more naturally, I am excited to see more of them.  But, with these changes to the grocery store shelves I proceed with caution.

“Natural” is not a regulated term.  Unlike “organic” which has guidelines that the food company must follow according to the USDA.  Food companies can use the term “natural” any way they like and to mean anything they like.  So, just because a food boasts that it is “natural” doesn’t mean much… you have to look at the food label and ingredients.  Most importantly, if you can’t read the ingredients, or better yet, if you wouldn’t recognize the ingredients in a lineup, it isn’t natural… no matter what the label says.

So, when a label says no high fructose corn syrup… my interest is peaked. Sara Lee just re-launched their Soft & Smooth 100% Whole Wheat Bakery Bread and their Soft & Smooth Made with Whole Grain White Bread with the high fructose corn syrup removed.

I’ve shared my list of items that I buy organic and why here.  And, while the bread is not one of the items I buy organic consistently, I do purchase organic varieties frequently, such as Nature’s Own and Rudi’s Organic Bakery.  Both offer organic, whole wheat varieties without high fructose corn syrup.  I also make a lot of my own bread, such as rolls, breakfast breads, bagels, and baguettes, but I’ve yet to accomplish a good replacement to sandwich bread.

And while Rudi’s Organic Bakery still reigns as my favorite sandwich bread, Sara Lee’s Soft & Smooth 100% Whole Wheat Bakery Bread is a good alternative to other sandwich breads with high fructose corn syrup and definitely a healthy change from white bread.  And, the price is affordable for everyone at $2.79 per loaf (varies by region).
